[The] history of capitalism is not the history of a colonization of the subject by an oppressive and manipulative exteriority called “capital,” or even “capitalist,” but the history of the subject himself. The subject form is not that which is oppressed by the commodity form and must be liberated: indeed, the two forms have become almost identical. On the other hand, it is evident that the capitalist relationship does not encompass all aspects of life and consciousness. Otherwise no one could even criticize it, and men would be part of society as ants are part of anthill.

The social constraints were internalized at the same time as the commercial logic, or, to be more precise, there was a parallel and joint development of the subject form and the commodity form. […]

It is therefore necessary to criticize the conceptions which attach a central role to the forms of personal domination as well as the demands of “self-management” and a “real democracy” (or “direct”), in all its variants. It is also necessary to underline the limits of a large part of the traditional anarchist discourse, which is too preoccupied with the political and organizational aspects of alienation. The history of failed revolutions is not limited to the betrayal of the good revolutionary people by their leaders, corrupted by the exercise of power – even if this aspect has obviously been added to it. People and leaders often share the same fetishistic ways. In a fetish society, the purest form of self-management is useless. There is no need to break your head on the thousand and one details of a direct democracy guaranteed “anti-manipulation”, about the “mandate” modalities that will exist in a direct democracy or about the right balance of the political unities, if what is decided in the most democratic way of the world is always the execution of unconsciously systemic imperatives. [A] história do capitalismo não é a história de uma colonização do sujeito por uma exterioridade opressiva e manipuladora chamada “capital”, ou mesmo “capitalista”, mas sim a história do próprio sujeito. A forma sujeito não é aquilo que se encontra oprimido pela forma mercadoria e que é necessário libertar: com efeito, as duas formas tornaram-se quase idênticas. Por outro lado, é evidente que a relação capitalista não engloba todos os aspectos da vida e da consciência. Do contrário ninguém poderia sequer criticá-la, e os homens fariam parte da sociedade como as formigas fazem parte do formigueiro.

Os constrangimentos sociais foram interiorizados ao mesmo tempo que a lógica mercantil, ou, para ser mais preciso, deu-se um desenvolvimento paralelo e conjunto da forma sujeito e da forma mercadoria. […]

É, portanto, necessário criticar as concepções que atribuem um papel central às formas de dominação pessoal bem como às reivindicações de “autogestão” e de uma “democracia real” (ou “direta”), em todas as suas variantes. É preciso igualmente sublinhar os limites de uma grande parte do discurso anarquista tradicional, demasiado preocupado com o aspecto político e organizacional da alienação. A história das revoluções fracassadas não se resume à traição do bom povo revolucionário por seus dirigentes, corrompidos pelo exercício do poder – mesmo se este aspecto lhe tenha obviamente sido adicionado. Povo e líderes frequentemente compartilham as mesmas formas fetichistas. No seio de uma sociedade fetichista, a forma mais pura de nada serve. Inútil quebrar a cabeça sobre os mil e um detalhes de uma democracia direta “antimanipulação” garantida, sobre as modalidades dos “mandatos” que existirão mesmo em uma democracia direta ou sobre o justo equilíbrio das unidades políticas, se tudo que se decide da forma mais democrática do mundo é sempre a execução dos imperativos sistêmicos inconscientemente pressupostos.
